To support Community Alert Month, Skyrne Community Alert held a successful event in the RST Community Centre
We met several times recently as a busy committee putting together our 1st public meeting since before COVID. We were delighted that our guest speaker Minister Helen McEntee joined us for the entire night. Helen gave an inspiring overview of the importance of CAG’s and the collaboration with our local liaison Garda among various other topics.
On the night we were also joined by no less than 4 members of our local community Gardai – Garda Barbara Kelly, Garda Ethan Fitzpatrick, Sargent Barry Connor and Acting CPO Mark Doyle. All the Gardaí spoke about the importance of continued vigilance, awareness and vulnerabilities of community members in our ever growing parish. Two members from our own committee, Hugh McNeilis and Patricia Conroy, gave wonderful presentations on the value and importance of our Text Alert and SAS Personal Alarms respectively.
We were also joined by members of our local fire department. Hugh McCarthy gave a very practical presentation on all kinds of alarms which were inexpensive and should be our first line of defence with fire and CO2 in our homes .Finally one of our wonderful First Responders, Margaret Hanahoe, gave an informative presentation on CPR, recovery position and how to use a AED.
On a miserable night we had a captive audience of 90 for the entire meeting . Several questions were thoughtfully managed by our MC Maurice Daly to our panel.
Our diligent volunteers dispatched hundreds of the community survey forms in some inclement weather, while many completed our online version (done with SurveyMonkey, thanks to Hugh). We received a considered response both on doorways and through the forms themselves. The main concerns were:
- Unaware of the Text Alert system.
- Unaware of a dedicated Community Liaison Officer.
- Rural Crime and vulnerabilities of older members of community.
- Rural policing in the aftermath of suspicious activities.
Later on while our audience enjoyed refreshments our panel mingled and chatted informally. Hugh and Patricia gave advice and signed up new members to Text Alert and Seniors Alert alarms.
All in all it was a very successful event with an audience who reflected this in their comments of the importance of this valued resource in our ever expanding engaging community. Thanks to Leanne and all at Muintir na Tíre for your valued continued support and guidance (in particular the community survey) for our relaunch night.
