Recently elected President, Jackie Meally, wishes all our communities a Happy Christmas

“It is indeed a great honour to be elected as president of Muintir Na Tíre and to walk in the footsteps of the past presidents since 1937. Muintir Na Tíre is still as relevant within rural and community development as it was back then and throughout the years since.

We have been through unprecedented times in the last few years with the Covid-19 Pandemic and the war in Ukraine among other things. While the response to these issues was a national response in the main, there has been a significant response from our local communities. During the Pandemic, our communities gave a magnificent response at local level supporting the most vulnerable sections of our communities, transporting, delivering shopping and medicines to name but a few and of course keeping an eye in our elderly and people living alone. As we began to come out the other end of the Pandemic, we have witnessed the start of the war in Ukraine, and again our communities have played a significant part in the overall response in supporting Ukrainians within our communities. It is this type of community support of national issues that can make our overall response more successful. The issue of rural crime has raised its head also and I would encourage our Community Alert organisations to remain vigilant and as always, to keep an eye out for our neighbours.

As we are coming up to Christmas I would like take this opportunity to thank our CEO and staff for their great work throughout the year and also to wish our hundreds of Community Councils and Community Alert organisations around the country a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.”
