Community Alert 25th Anniversary Conference
Garda College, Templemore - 30th October 2010
Ingrained in the core principles of Muintir na Tíre is the concept of neighbourliness and it is on this that the Community Alert Programme is based. This national rural community crime prevention programme was initiated by Muintir na Tíre in 1985. The real essence of Community Alert is perhaps best encapsulated by the words of the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese on her recent visit to Tipperary to mark the 25th Anniversary of Community Alert;
“This is a network of care, a network of looking out for one another. When you went into homes you saw people who needed help, people in poverty, those who needed the benefit of a visit and/or personal contact. You provided simple answers to complex problems. It is not humanly possible to measure your impact on people’s lives. People feel safer, happier and less alone because of Community Alert. The amazing thing is that Muintir na Tíre didn’t have to do this. You could easily have walked along on the other side of the road and said it was someone else’s problem. It is to your eternal credit that you didn’t do that and you have given powerful witness to our young people of what people can do when they work in a spirit of community and citizenship. I wish there was some way of capturing in a real sense the sheer reach of it. The real tribute to you is that we can’t do that, it is too vast”.

Carrig/Lorrha Conference
Carrig Hall 13th October 2010
In the week and year that marks annual Community Alert events nationally and also the 25th Anniversary of the Munitir Na Tíre supported initiative respectively, fittingly, in a display of impressive solidarity, several areas in North Tipperary joined in hosting a local event to raise the profile of greater community awareness.
Organised by both Lorrha and Carrig/ Riverstown/ Killeen Community Alert Groups, a Community Alert seminar took place at Carrig Hall where topics up for discussion covered a range of issues from safety in rural communities, isolation and elder abuse. Key speakers on the evening included Liam Kelly, National Co-ordinator with Community Alert, Muintir Na Tíre President Martin Quinn, Elderly Care Social Worker in North Tipperary Maggie McNally as well as recently retired Governor of Mountjoy Prison John Lonergan. Also present were local Gardai including Inspector Bernard Barry from Nenagh, local Community Alert committee members, locally elected officials, Independent Cllr Michael O'Meara and Fianna Fáil's Jim Casey and Gemma and Peter Butler from TASK Community Care.
